While By The River itself has many charms, perhaps its best feature is its location. With the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons, the winding River Wye, lakes and forests, there is no shortage of ways to enjoy the stunning scenery...
WALK
With the Wye Valley Trail on our doorstep (join across the bridge), walking direct from your room couldn’t be easier. Head west towards Hay on Wye for beautiful riverside views or east, along the river then up through the hills of mid wales. In Hay, connect to the Offa’s Dyke Trail – following the border north or south. Or explore the many trails and loops in the Black Mountains or Brecon Beacons. Walkers are definitely welcome!
RUN
Short riverside routes or loops including quiet country lanes make running easy! Or tackle parts of the long-distance paths along the riverside or into the hills. Local running group The Hay Hotfooters host regular events including a Saturday 5k (Hay Riverside Run) – rain or shine.
CYCLE
We are spoiled with a fantastic network of cycle routes, quiet country lanes, and incredible off-road and trail runs. Glasbury is at the heart of two long distance routes - the superb long-distance Lon Las Cymru (National Route No 8) which runs between Cardiff and Anglesey (passing directly through Glasbury). Route 42 joins Chepstow to Glasbury offering incredible cycling through the Vale of Ewyas and past Llantony Priory. See
www.sustrans.org.uk for route ideas and the Mid Wales South Cycle Map.
CANOE
couldn’t be easier from By The River – Celtic Canoes are based next door and offer half and full day trips down the river.

WILD SWIMMING
Step straight into the beautiful River Wye from the pebbly shore opposite for a cooling river swim, or journey a little further afield along the river bank to discover pools that are perfect for peaceful enjoyment of the waterways.
RIDING
Enjoy short hacks or half/full day excursions from these well-established riding centres, all within a very short drive from By The River.

whether you’ve been out all day enjoying the hills, trails, or riverbank, or visiting our local towns and attractions, finish your day on our terrace watching the river flow by. Herons, Egrets, Kingfishers, and Otters may make an appearance!
All our guests have access to the riverside terrace and tables throughout their stay – a perfect spot for an early cup of tea or sunset drink.
